  • ~Busy Days~

I fell like the days are flying by. Hours, days, weeks…. they seem to be picking up speed. For days I have been wanting to blog, and each day I think, tomorrow. So this morning I have been thinking of all that has gone on around here. All the good things, bad things, and things that seem already forgotten.

The most excitement these days has been watching Gabe learn to walk. He’s taken his sweet time. All of our other children have been walking by 10 months. Gabe is turning 13 months this week. The children have spent months now working with him. They walked with him, encouraged him, bribed him, and the boy would just not walk. Really would not walk. He would plop his little bottom on the floor with dead weight and when they would give up, he would crawl off. It was rather amusing at times. Almost as if he was saying “I won’t walk and not a soul in this world can make me!” The children were persistent though. My favorite to watch was Maryann. She’s not that much bigger than Gabe all things considered. She would clap and squeal and yell “He’s walking Mommy!” As Gabe would take little steps holding on to the chair or coffee table. It was one of these times that I heard her clapping and squealing, that I stuck my head around the corner to see Gabe taking steps towards her all on his own. Not holding onto a thing. Think if we all had cheerleaders like this to get through life. Gabe was smiling at Maryann, and she was almost jumping up and down she was so excited for him.

Now he works at walking all the time. Crawling is still the choice for the fastest way to get around for him. But he’s getting closer everyday. As I look at him, it seems like last week that I called Eric at school and said, “You need to come home NOW, I’m going to have this baby!” With it being one of my worst pregnancies, I was more than happy to be done. Alot has happened this last year. Graduation. A big move. Bought a practice. A new job. A new community. A new house. New friends. the list goes on and on… I think this is why it seems like yesterday Gabe was born. The busier life is the faster it spins around me.

The older children have stayed busy with school and play. It is so much easier to get school done when it’s raining outside. We took so much time off this last year with are move and settling in and exploring this new home. The boys still love to head outdoors as soon as they finish up school for the day. And every time I have to remind them that we are NOT in Southern California anymore. “No flip flops or Crocs. Put on a sweater. Where’s you rain coat? Yes, you HAVE to wear socks with your boots!” They definitely don’t get this from me. I hate being cold and wet. The most I head outside these days is to get in the car to go somewhere. Gone are the sunny days that I love so much. A fire, candles, apples and cinnamon simmering on the stove, this is how I survive the winter here. No puddle jumping, pond wading, or riding bikes in the rain for me!

A highlight of the last month for me has been “date night”. While Eric was in school this somehow always got put on hold. Mostly finances, but time too. Studying, labs, and patients were far more important to graduate than a date with your wife. But that’s ok. We were in this together! But now that Eric has a job (the first real job since he left the ARMY 10 years ago…it’s been school every since) we put “Date Night” a high priority. We found a wonderful babysitter who I feel confidant leaving 6 children behind with. So every Wednesday night, I make dinner for the children, get dressed up, and drive to the restaurant of choice to meet my man. It’s been fun. No, it’s been FABULOUS!! It’s nice to not be in school anymore. There are definitely a few perks!

Here are a few quotes from the children this last week that I jotted down so as not to forget…

Joshua, after throwing a hammer at his brothers head..”Mom, I meant to throw it OVER his head, but it did not go where I threw it!” (sometimes it’s hard for me to keep a straight face with this boy)

Michael, after coming to me dripping wet and muddy…”Mom, I know you said not to accidently fall in the pond, but I was laughing so hard, I couldn’t help myself” (again, I try to keep a straight face, while scolding)

Maryann, after weighing herself on my bathroom scale… “Mommy, how much do I cost today?”
(this is how you can find her all summer. Two miss-matched crocs.)

A family birthday party… the cousins (missing Gabe and Gracie)

    And the whole family…

And Great Grandpa, 92 years old

My brother-in-law, always up for a good laugh!

  • ~Apples, Apples, Apples~

We have had a lot of apples around here these days. Apple pies, apple sauce, apple cider. And what better way to celebrate fall than to have an Apple Party? So that is just what we did. Apples was the theme. I used them for decorating, baking, and gifts.
A few days before the party, the forecast was for rain. No surprises there. We are in Oregon after all. But then Saturday morning came with brilliant rays of sunshine and bright blue skies. A perfect day for our party! We spent the morning cleaning up and getting things ready. Laura and I had spent some time earlier in the week decorating a table, so we would know what we wanted that day. I had gone to Joann’s in search of fabric and was disappointed in the prices as I was using it for tablecloth and needed 36 feet to cover all my tables. Just as I was getting ready to leave and come up with plan B, I spotted burlap cloth for super cheap. And there was plenty of it too. It was a “seasonal item”, so I was thrilled. Perfect!
So with burlap table clothes, (This required no sewing, just cut enough for each table. And it washed great so it’s in the tub for next years apple party!) lots and lots of apples, acorns from the giant tree in our yard, and some leaves, we decorated the tables. This was definitely my favorite part.
I baked 10 dozen cupcakes, sliced apples to go with carmel dip, and canned apple butter to send home with each guest. The children were delighted that we were having a party. It’s been awhile. So each of our friends and family were invited. I am sad to say though, that I snapped a few pictures before guests started arriving, but then I set my camera down on a table and it was still sitting there 4 hours later when the last guests were leaving. So no pictures of the party. Just a few from beforehand. And the number of guests that came to our Apple party…95!

  • ~a visit from our friends~

A few weeks ago (I am really behind on blogging) some special friends drove up to spend the weekend with us. All 12 of us had a great time. The children were excited to see their friends again and show them all the new things around this place. We went on another wagon ride because we had so much fun the first time. And really, can a child ever ride on a wagon pulled by horses too much?? My children would say definitely NOT!
We ate big breakfasts together around our dining room table. And dinners too. It was good food, good friends and good fellowship!
And the quote of the weekend…”I’m just infatuated with plungers!!” Sam~6

On our way to show them the river

Here he is picking a flower (aka dandelion) and then he crawls over and gives it to me. My first flower from him!

  • ~Traveling Back in our States History~

This year celebrates 150 years of statehood for Oregon. There has been many different ways of celebrating. One of the dairies came up with “150th Edition Flavor” for their ice cream. I can’t remember what it was now, even though I bought it and ate it. I remember it was good! More locally, our county had a “150th” birthday party for Oregon. They had it set up so that you could see what life was like 150 years ago. There were many hands on activities for the children. From Candle making to scrubbing clothes on a washboard. We had a great afternoon pretending we lived 150 years ago. Happy Birthday Oregon!!!

    carrying water

    washing clothes

a few days ago we made it to a local farm and each child picked out a pumpkin for my front porch. It was fun to watch what they picked and hear their reasons why. Ben had to have the biggest. So bug that he could not even carry it. Maryann chose a very small perfectly round and very clean pumpkin. Laura chose hers to be a different size from the others so that it would be a “balanced looking group of pumpkins”

  • ~a week with Grandpa and Grandma~

Grandpa Luke and Grandma Beth flew out to visit us in our new home and give Eric and I a chance to get away for a few days to celebrate our 11th anniversary. The time flew by and we all had a great time making wonderful new memories of our new life. Here are the pics from their visit.

We passed this helicopter on a trailer on our way to the airport to pick up Grandpa and Grandma.

    Coming out of the airport

A much anticipated Birthday Party for a little girl turning 3!

New matching nightgowns for Maryann and “MayMay”

    Buddies

And another birthday…Gabe got a wagon from Grandpa and Grandma. He fell in love with the wheels!

Ponchos brought from the Army base just in time for the Elk Hunting trip coming up.

    Friends and bike riding buddies

    The first wagon ride!

And this is what happens when your Dad is a dentist and you say you have a lose tooth…

He takes you to his office and numbs you up and extracts that tooth.

Heading into our favorite restaurant down by Eric office.

And then onto a “Real” wagon ride.

The children took turns riding up front with the Wagon Master

    Buddies!

Saw this guy on the side of the road…the boys plan on bringing one home in a few weeks and hanging its head over their beds! We’ll see…

Thanks Grandpa for being such a special person in Gabe’s life!

Our view of the river in front of our house

The last swim of the summer. The water was freezing this time. I have told the children for weeks that one of these days we are going to head down to the river and it will be to cold to swim. Well today was the day. The river will start to rise and continue to rise about 20 feet over the next few months, then drop again by next summer.

And a few special pictures to remember the weekend!

Lots of time spent on the swing.

    ~The whole gang~

More wagon rides! Love those wagon rides!
